OLED vs QLED vs Mini LED: Which TV Technology Should You Choose?
Buying a new TV means choosing more than just a screen size — the panel technology matters too. OLED, QLED and Mini LED sound alike, but they build the picture in completely different ways.
How do OLED, QLED and Mini LED differ?
The core difference is how the screen produces light.
OLED — every pixel lights itself. When black is needed, the pixel simply switches off, so black is truly black and contrast is practically infinite. That is why OLED is unbeaten in a dark room and for watching films.
QLED — this is a regular LCD screen with a quantum dot layer that widens the colour gamut and boosts brightness. The QLED panel does not light itself — an LED backlight shines from behind. Upsides: rich colours, high brightness and no burn-in risk.
Mini LED — the same LCD with quantum dots, but the backlight is made of thousands of tiny LEDs grouped into local dimming zones. The more zones, the more precisely the screen controls light: blacks get deeper and bright objects get brighter. Samsung calls this technology Neo QLED, LG calls it QNED.
Brightness, contrast and the halo effect
- Contrast and black levels: OLED wins. Mini LED gets close, but around bright objects on a dark background you can sometimes see a light halo (blooming). Plain QLED without Mini LED is weakest here.
- Brightness: Mini LED leads. Good models reach 2,000–4,000 nits, while OLED usually stays in the 800–1,500 nit range. So in a bright room with windows, Mini LED or QLED is easier to see.
- Burn-in: the risk applies only to OLED, though modern sets have protection built in. QLED and Mini LED do not have this problem.
What to choose by room and budget
- Dark room, films, gaming → OLED. Perfect black and contrast matter most.
- Bright living room with windows → Mini LED or QLED. High brightness beats reflections.
- Limited budget → QLED. A good picture for less money.
- Best all-round balance → Mini LED. Near-OLED contrast, higher brightness and no burn-in.
