Garmin is quietly lining up its next adventure watch. Here's what the leaks, patents and app code reveal about the Fenix 9.
Garmin's Fenix line is the benchmark for premium multisport watches, and the Fenix 9 is shaping up as the next step. Garmin hasn't confirmed it yet, but a reference to the watch surfaced in the Garmin Connect Android app code in June 2026, and the company's own CEO has pointed to major outdoor launches in the second half of the year. Here's what the leaks and patents suggest — and who should hold out for it.
When is it coming? The most likely window is autumn 2026, with September or October the favoured guess. Nothing is official, so treat the date as rumour until Garmin says otherwise.
Display Expect the AMOLED panel to stay, now brighter and more efficient — leaks point to peak brightness near 3,000 nits. The bright MicroLED screen Garmin debuted on the Garmin Fenix 8 Pro isn't expected to reach the standard Fenix 9 this year; that technology is still tipped for 2027. A solar transflective option should continue in the larger sizes for anyone who prioritises battery over a vivid screen.
Sizes and design The familiar 43mm, 47mm and 51mm cases look set to return, so existing straps and quick-fit bands should carry over. This is evolution, not a redesign — the Fenix silhouette stays.
Performance and battery A faster processor (NXP's i.MX RT700 class is the leading rumour) should fix the Fenix 8's main weakness: sluggish map rendering and route recalculation. Battery life should edge up through more efficient components rather than a new cell, so expect a few extra days rather than a leap.
Health and sensors A new-generation Elevate optical heart-rate sensor is plausible, bringing more accurate readings and better arrhythmia detection. More speculative is a Garmin patent from early 2026 describing blood-sugar estimation via pulse spectroscopy — interesting, but not something to count on for this release.
Price If Garmin holds the line, the AMOLED Fenix 9 should start around €1,000, with Pro, titanium and sapphire variants climbing toward €1,500. Official pricing isn't announced yet.
Should you wait? If you already own a Garmin Fenix 8, the Fenix 9 looks like a modest upgrade — brighter screen, snappier maps, small battery gains. If you're on an older Fenix or coming from another brand, waiting a few months could be worth it. Either way, the current Fenix 8 remains one of the best Garmin smartwatches you can buy right now while the Fenix 9 firms up.
