Garmin Fenix 8 vs Apple Watch Ultra 3: Which Watch Should You Buy?

The two priciest adventure watches on the market solve different problems. Here is how to decide which one earns your money.

Garmin Fenix 8 and Apple Watch Ultra 3 sit at the very top of the adventure-watch market, but they answer different questions. One is a dedicated multisport instrument that also handles smartwatch duties; the other is a full smartwatch tough enough to survive a mountain. Here is how they stack up side by side.

Who they are for

The Fenix 8 is built for athletes and outdoor people who measure trips in days, not hours. The Apple Watch Ultra 3 is for iPhone owners who want one watch for the office, the gym and the occasional summit — without giving up apps, calls and messages.

Design and build

Garmin offers three sizes — 43, 47 and 51 mm — so it fits a slimmer wrist too. Apple has a single 49 mm titanium case. Both are dive-rated to 40 m and certified for diving (EN13319), and both have raised, easy-to-find buttons. The Fenix has a built-in speaker and microphone, so you can take calls straight from the wrist.

Display

Here Apple wins on numbers: the Ultra 3 has the largest OLED screen ever fitted to an Apple Watch, with up to 3,000 nits of brightness that reads perfectly in direct sun. The Garmin AMOLED panel (454×454 pixels on the 47 and 51 mm models) is bright but tops out around 1,000 nits. In practice both are easy to read outdoors.

Health and sensors

Both offer ECG, blood-oxygen measurement and overnight heart-rate tracking. The Fenix 8 uses Garmin Elevate Gen 5 sensor with an ECG function. The Ultra 3 adds Apple-ecosystem health tools — sleep-apnoea detection and notifications for possible high blood pressure. For everyday health monitoring, both rank among the best on the market.

Sport, training and battery

This is the biggest gap. The Fenix 8 (51 mm AMOLED) runs up to roughly 29 days in smartwatch mode and lasts several days with GPS active — the Ultra 3 reaches about 42 hours here (up to 72 in low-power mode). Garmin also goes far deeper on training: Training Readiness, Endurance and Hill scores, multisport tracking and topographic maps with multi-band GPS. For marathoners and ultra-distance runners, the Garmin advantage is clear.

Smart features

Apple leads here. The Ultra 3 runs full watchOS — messages, calls, maps and thousands of apps, plus new tricks: 5G connectivity and two-way satellite messaging for SOS without a phone. But the Apple watch absolutely requires an iPhone. The Fenix 8 works with both iPhone and Android through Garmin Connect — an important plus for Android users.

Price and value

The Apple Watch Ultra 3 starts at around 730 € in the Baltics, while the Garmin Fenix 8 starts at around 620 €, though pricier Fenix configurations with sapphire glass cost considerably more. It is worth checking current prices, as offers for both models fluctuate.

Verdict

If battery life, serious training tools and Android compatibility matter most, choose the Garmin Fenix 8. If you use an iPhone and want one watch for everyday life and adventure with a full app ecosystem, the Apple Watch Ultra 3 is the better pick. Browse more options in the smartwatches category.
