What Is ANC? Active Noise Cancellation Explained
Active noise cancellation has become the headline feature of pricier headphones, but not every ANC system is equal. Here is how it works and what to check before you buy.
What ANC actually does
Active noise cancellation (ANC) uses tiny microphones to listen to the noise around you, then plays a mirror-image sound wave that cancels it out before it reaches your ear. It works best on steady, low-frequency sound — an aeroplane cabin, a bus engine, office air conditioning. It does far less against sudden or high-pitched sounds like a nearby conversation or a slamming door. For those, a tight physical seal does most of the work.
Passive vs active isolation
Two things block noise. Passive isolation is the physical barrier — the ear tips wedged in your canal or the padded cups over your ears. ANC is the electronic layer on top. Without a good seal even the best ANC underperforms, which is why the right ear-tip size matters as much as the processor.
Feedforward, feedback and hybrid
- Feedforward puts the mic on the outside of the earphone, catching noise before it arrives. Fast, but it can misjudge how the sound changes inside your ear.
- Feedback puts the mic inside, next to the driver, measuring what you actually hear and correcting it. More accurate for fit, weaker at high frequencies.
- Hybrid uses both and is what every serious pair now fits — wider frequency coverage and fewer weak spots.
Features worth paying for
- Adaptive ANC raises or lowers cancellation automatically as your surroundings change, so you are not toggling modes on a train.
- Transparency (ambient) mode pipes outside sound back in when you need to hear an announcement or traffic. Apple's AirPods Pro even soften sudden loud noises in this mode.
- Wind handling — cheap ANC often roars in wind, better models filter it out.
- Bluetooth multipoint keeps you connected to a phone and a laptop at once.
- Codecs like LDAC (Sony) or aptX Adaptive carry more detail if your music service supports them.
- Battery — ANC drains it faster, so check the rated hours with ANC switched on, not off.
Which ones set the standard
Bose and Sony trade the crown for outright cancellation. The Bose QuietComfort Ultra is widely rated the quietest over-ears you can buy, while the Sony WH-1000XM5 pairs strong ANC with LDAC and excellent call quality. If you want earbuds, the Sony WF-1000XM5 fits most of that into a pocketable shell. Compare all noise-cancelling earphones to match your budget.
