The best Android flagship meets the best iPhone. Here is how the Galaxy S26 Ultra and iPhone 17 Pro Max compare on camera, battery, and price.

Both phones sit at the very top of each brand lineup, and for many buyers this is the only comparison that matters: the best Android against the best iPhone. They cost about the same, share the same 6.9-inch footprint, and both promise to last a full day. The differences are in the details — and in which ecosystem you already live in.

Design and build

The Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra is the lighter and slimmer of the two at 214 g and 7.9 mm, with a Gorilla Armor 2 front that cuts glare noticeably. It also keeps the built-in S Pen, still the only flagship that lets you write and sketch directly on the screen. The iPhone 17 Pro Max is heavier at 233 g and thicker at 8.8 mm, but Apple switched to a laser-welded aluminium unibody with an internal vapour chamber, so it runs cooler under load and feels reassuringly solid. Both carry IP68 water resistance.

Display

The screens are closely matched: both are 6.9-inch LTPO OLED panels with a 120 Hz adaptive refresh rate. Samsung pushes a sharper 1440 x 3120 resolution and adds a new Privacy Display mode that narrows viewing angles in public. Apple hits a higher 3000-nit peak brightness, which helps outdoors. In everyday use you will be happy with either.

Camera

This is where they diverge most. The S26 Ultra keeps its four-camera system: a 200 MP main sensor, a 50 MP 5x periscope, a 10 MP 3x telephoto, and a 50 MP ultrawide, reaching up to 100x Space Zoom. It is the more flexible kit, especially for distant subjects. The iPhone 17 Pro Max uses three 48 MP sensors — main, ultrawide, and a new 4x periscope that Apple stretches to an 8x "optical-quality" crop — plus an 18 MP Center Stage front camera that reframes group shots automatically. Samsung wins on reach and raw resolution; Apple stays ahead for consistent colour and class-leading video.

Performance and battery

Under the hood the Galaxy runs a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 with up to 16 GB of RAM; the iPhone runs the A19 Pro with 12 GB. Both are faster than almost anyone needs. Batteries are near-identical on paper — 5000 mAh in the Samsung, about 5088 mAh in the iPhone — and both comfortably clear a day. Samsung charges quicker, at 60 W wired versus roughly 40 W on the iPhone, though Apple now also hits 50 % in about 20 minutes.

Software and ecosystem

The Galaxy runs One UI on Android 16 with Galaxy AI and seven years of updates; the iPhone runs iOS 26 with Apple Intelligence. If your laptop, watch, and earbuds are Apple, the iPhone slots in seamlessly. If you want more customisation, the S Pen, and a Google-services-first phone, the Galaxy is the natural pick.

Price and value

At matching storage the Galaxy S26 Ultra is the cheaper flagship — it launched at 929 € for the 256 GB model, while the iPhone 17 Pro Max starts higher. Prices move constantly, so check current smartphone offers before you buy.

Verdict

Pick the Galaxy S26 Ultra if you want the most versatile camera, the S Pen, a lighter body, and a lower price. Pick the iPhone 17 Pro Max if you value the smoothest video, the strongest ecosystem, and the aluminium build. Neither is a wrong choice — the tie-breaker is the phone your other devices already talk to.
