The two most expensive phones of 2026 go head to head — cameras, screens, batteries and price compared, so you know which one earns its premium.

Two flagships, two philosophies

Spring 2026 brought a showdown between the two most powerful phones on the market: the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra, an Android device with a built-in stylus, and the Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max running iOS. Both cost about the same, both pack 12GB of RAM and a roughly 5,000mAh battery — yet they take very different routes.

Design and build

Interestingly, both makers went back to aluminium this generation. Samsung dropped titanium after two years, and Apple swapped titanium for a machined aluminium unibody with vapour-chamber cooling in its Pro line for the first time. The S26 Ultra is the thinnest and lightest Ultra ever — just 7.9mm and 214g, with the S Pen tucked inside. The iPhone 17 Pro Max is heavier (around 233g) and stands out with its large horizontal camera plateau.

Display

The S26 Ultra offers a 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X screen with 1440p resolution, 120Hz and up to 2,600 nits of brightness. The headline feature is a hardware Privacy Display that physically narrows the viewing angle so the person next to you can't read your screen. The iPhone 17 Pro Max has a 6.86-inch Super Retina XDR OLED with ProMotion 120Hz and an even brighter 3,000-nit peak. Samsung wins on sharpness and privacy, Apple on outdoor brightness.

Camera

This is where the gap is widest. The S26 Ultra carries a 200MP main sensor, a 50MP ultra-wide and a 50MP 5x periscope telephoto — meaning longer optical reach and more detail in distant shots. The iPhone 17 Pro Max uses three 48MP sensors, including a 4x tetraprism telephoto with 8x sensor crop, plus a new 18MP Center Stage front camera. For stills, Samsung gives you more flexibility and zoom; Apple traditionally leads in video and colour consistency.

Performance and battery

The S26 Ultra runs the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, the iPhone the Apple A19 Pro with vapour-chamber cooling. Both breeze through games and AI features. The batteries are close: 5,000mAh on the Samsung versus 5,088mAh on the Apple. Still, the iPhone 17 Pro Max lasts longer than any iPhone before it — up to 39 hours of video playback. Samsung answers with faster 60W charging (around 75% in half an hour), while Apple tops up at 40W wired and 25W over MagSafe.

Price and value

Launch prices are nearly identical — both started around €1,450. On the open market, though, the S26 Ultra is usually noticeably cheaper than the iPhone 17 Pro Max. If budget matters, Samsung gives you more for less. It's always worth checking current deals across smartphones.

Verdict

Pick the S26 Ultra if you want the most versatile camera with long zoom, the S Pen, a sharper screen and freedom from Apple's ecosystem. Pick the iPhone 17 Pro Max if you already use other Apple devices, shoot a lot of video or value the longest battery life. Technically both are among the best phones of the year — the decision comes down to your ecosystem and whether zoom or video quality matters more to you.
