Four 50MP cameras, an 8,000-nit screen and a 6,000mAh battery – but no Google services. Is this your flagship?

The Huawei Mate 80 Pro Max is Huawei's latest flagship, returning to a premium all-metal unibody and packing one of the most capable camera systems on the market. The phone has already launched in China, but it is not officially sold in the Baltics yet, so a local price has not been announced.

Display and design

The front holds a 6.9-inch dual-layer OLED LTPO panel with a 120Hz refresh rate and a record 8,000-nit peak brightness, keeping the screen readable even in harsh sunlight. Resolution is 1320 × 2848. The body is just 8.25mm thick and weighs 239g, machined from a single piece of metal, while IP68 and IP69 ratings mean it survives dust, immersion and even a jet of hot water.

Cameras

The headline feature is four 50MP-class cameras. The main 50MP sensor adds a variable aperture and optical stabilisation, while zoom is handled by two separate telephotos: a 50MP macro telephoto and a 50MP periscope with 6.2x optical reach. A 40MP ultrawide rounds out the set. Images are processed by a second-generation Red Maple imaging chip. Up front sits a 13MP camera with a 3D depth sensor for secure face unlock.

Kirin 9030 Pro and HarmonyOS

Inside is the new Kirin 9030 Pro chip with up to 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage. The most important thing for buyers: the Mate 80 Pro Max runs HarmonyOS 6 without Google services. That means no standard Google Play Store, Gmail or YouTube apps – you install software through Huawei's AppGallery or alternative sources. This is the biggest trade-off that decides whether the phone is right for you.

Battery and connectivity

The 6,000mAh battery supports 100W wired and 80W wireless charging – zero to full in roughly half an hour. There is also satellite connectivity, Bluetooth 6.0 and Wi-Fi 6.

Who is it for?

The Mate 80 Pro Max is one of the most powerful camera phones around, suited to anyone who values zoom and does not mind the HarmonyOS ecosystem. In China prices start at around €1,000 (512GB) and reach €1,130 (1TB). If you need Google services, consider the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra or Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max; browse the full range in the Huawei phones catalogue.
